I am often asked why I defend DUI charges. My answer is: DUI is “the neighbor crime”, a crime that with an extra drink or two, any of our neighbors, reliable folks we have known for years, could suddenly find themselves facing a serious criminal charge.

I have been advocating for clients in the criminal court system in Clark County for over 20 years. In the course of my legal career I have represented over 3,000 men and women charged with DUI. A majority of these clients have never been involved in the court system before, and have never returned to the court system. To that end, my obligation to those who choose to retain my services is very clear… to prevent a short-term mistake from becoming a long-term consequence.

To accomplish this goal, I focus on three elements in my client relationships:

1. (1)Listen. Understanding the events that lead up to the DUI charge, the client’s perspective and insight following the charge, and the client’s overall goals, are crucial to forming a working relationship. Listening helps us establish a direction for the case, set measurable goals, and develop a plan to work together toward a successful outcome.
2. (2)Educate. It has been my experience that the best way to prevent fear and uncertainty, while empowering clients, is to share an understanding of the overall DUI process and the specific events in a client’s case. Once a client has a good understanding of the mechanics of a DUI case we can discuss the decisions and options we will encounter as we work toward a successful resolution.
3. (3)Communicate. Even a successful outcome can become stressful if a client feels “in the dark”. My team and I work to keep clients informed every step of the way. It is our job to ensure the client is cared for and informed both during the case and in the years following.

I value the clients I have represented and the small role I have played in their lives. It is my hope to continue to assist and counsel good people, my “neighbors”, who are facing a DUI charge in Clark County in the years to come.

I focus my law practice exclusively on defending driving-related criminal charges and navigating the collateral licensing issues that are often associated with those charges. To this end, a large portion of my practice is devoted to Department of Licensing administrative hearings (also called “Implied Consent” hearings). I have argued over 500 hearings, successfully obtained over 100 dismissals, and prevailed on dozens of appeals in Clark County Superior Court (including several commercial licensing cases). The odds are often stacked against drivers at these hearings, and I am passionate about ensuring that every detail and piece of evidence is carefully examined to craft the best legal defense possible at these hearings.

Beyond criminal and administrative litigation, I was also chosen to work with the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL) to assist in drafting statutory amendments and law changes relating to DUI licensing issues. In 2019, I testified in front of the state senate in support of these positive legislative changes, which simplify many aspects of the licensing process for drivers convicted of DUI-related offenses. Additionally, I was selected by the Washington Foundation for Criminal Justice (WFCJ) as a presenter on DUI licensing strategies at the statewide DUI Defense Seminar in both 2019 and 2020. As a result of my ongoing work in both the local and statewide criminal defense community, I was awarded the “Rising Star” award by the Clark County Bar Association in 2020. I continue to work closely with the defense community and DOL administration at the forefront of these issues, and I take pride in ensuring that every driver is afforded a fair opportunity to be heard in this complex and often overwhelming area of law.
